Bollywood has always used item numbers as a means to attract the crowd. The ubiquitous dance numbers feature skimpily clad, dexterous dancers who seduce the audience with their tantalizing moves. There was a time when item dances were performed by actresses who were considered bold and sex-symbols of their time, while the lead actress did not dare to gyrate or take risk for the fear of being typecast. However, now the trend has changed.
The lines between Vamps, item girls and lead actress have blurred.

Vidya Balan , the actress who has the capacity to successfully carry the whole movie on her able shoulders is reportedly doing an item number “Ferrai ki Sawaari” in a forthcoming Vidhu Vinod Chopra production. Vidya who has an image of a homely girl and a serious actress stunned the audience with her sexy, in your face seductive avatar in “The Dirty
Picture”.

Katrina Kaif, who starred in many blockbuster movies in the recent years, belly danced her way into many hearts in ‘Sheila ki Jawaani’(Tees Maar Khan) and mastered latkas – jhatkas in ‘Chikni Chameli’( Agneepath). Her contemporary Deepika Padukone not to be left behind gave the fans a rush with her ‘Dum Maro Dum’.

So we can safely say that today Item Numbers are essential spice in Bollywood and not just female leads but even male leads have joined the bandwagon of item queens /kings.
